Oblique waves lift the flapping flag.

The flapping of the flag is a classical model problem for the understanding of fluid-structure interaction: How does the flat state lose stability? Why do the nonlinear effects induce hysteretic behavior? We show in this Letter that, in contrast with the commonly studied model, the full three-dimensional flag with gravity has no stationary state whose stability can be formally studied: The wave...

Oblique Interaction of Solitary Waves

A highly efficient and accurate numerical scheme for initial and boundary value problems of a two-dimensional Boussinesq system which describes three-dimensional water waves is used to study in details the oblique interaction of a solitary wave and the evolution of solitary waves coming out of a narrower channel.

Double-hybrid density-functional theory with meta-generalized-gradient approximations.

We extend the previously proposed one-parameter double-hybrid density-functional theory [K. Sharkas, J. Toulouse, and A. Savin, J. Chem. Phys. 134, 064113 (2011)] to meta-generalized-gradient-approximation (meta-GGA) exchange-correlation density functionals. We construct several variants of one-parameter double-hybrid approximations using the Tao-Perdew-Staroverov-Scuseria (TPSS) meta-GGA funct...

An Earth Model Based on Free Oscillations and Body Waves

Several recent inversion studies have clearly indicated the lack of resolving power of the normal mode data set and the possible trade-offs among the various parameters. These studies have also shown that the final model is as dependent on the starting model as on the data set. It is therefore important to incorporate body wave data into any inversion scheme not only to gain resolution but also...

Oblique Shock Waves and Shock Reflection ∗ †

Oblique and conical shock waves are generated as solid projectile flies supersonically, or as a planar shock wave is reflected along a ramp. We study the stability of oblique shock waves for full Euler system of equations in gas-dynamics. The stability criterion is applied to the discussion of regular shock reflection phenomena and the transition of a regular shock reflection to Mach reflection.
